Q: What is this site all about?
A: Virginia born, Toronto based musician Kirsten Jones is gearing up to make her second album, The Mad Mile. Kirsten is an independent singer/songwriter. This site is set up to make an album that can compete in today’s ever-changing music marketplace – with your help! We take sponsorship donations from friends and fans right here on the website, and you can choose a level that makes sense for you. This is a really exciting new way to get involved in the making of Kirsten’s next CD from the ground up. You can check back on the front page of the website to see how we’re progressing, and you can pass on the website to family, friends and anyone else you like!

Q: How much money are you trying to raise? How are you processing the online payments?
A: $75,000. We are using Paypal - after careful review, we found that they were the best online payment system. You can pay with credit card or with your paypal account. You can visit their website here.

Q: What do you do with our information?
A: Your information will be stored in our database for the purposes of this project only. We will not sell it or give it out for any reason. We will contact you via the Kirsten Jones mailing list from time to time, but there will always be an option to remove yourself from the mailing list. Q: Why do you need so much money? Can’t you just make an album in your basement these days?
A: You can make an album in your basement. But Kirsten’s music has generated interest from alt country legend and Jayhawks’ front man Gary Louris. He has been involved in many of Kirsten’s favourite albums – from The Dixie Chicks to the Jayhawks to Tift Merritt to Kelly Willis. Now, he’ll be producing The Mad Mile, and he and Kirsten have done some co-writing as well. Also working on this CD will be Juno winner Denis Tougas, an engineer who has worked with Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, and Nelly Furtado (just to name a few). Add this to the incredible studio and musicians, and this is a world class project. This album is meant to play in the big leagues.

Back to the “basement album” – you can play it for your friends, but how do you get other people to hear it? This is where the rest of the money comes in. The album needs to be mixed, mastered, and produced for the marketplace. From there, there is marketing and promotion, radio tracking, legal fees, accounting, tour support, a video, and publicity.

Kirsten started this process thanks to a FACTOR loan. This “advance” gives Kirsten the capital to start the recording process, and she can pay back the loan as her album starts to sell.

Q: Why doesn’t Kirsten just sign with a label and get them to do all this?
A: The “record label” system as we know it is changing shape daily. Most “independent” artists are associated with a label at some level, but often are still in control of their own careers as a result of doing the “heavy lifting” up front. In this day and age, building your own career as an artist is an essential first step.

When The Mad Mile is done, we will look at the possibility of getting a label on board to help market, license, and/or distribute this CD, but the money raised on this website will be used to help elevate Kirsten’s career to that level without being beholden to a label. In other words, we’re very open to the idea of a label coming on board to do some of the career building when the album starts to pick up steam.

Music fans can participate in getting albums made like never before. Essentially, YOU are the record label. YOU are deciding what you want to hear, and the industry is listening for the first time in history.

Q: Is the money people donated to this project tax deductible?
A: Sorry, no. We are not a charitable organization. This website is set up as a sponsorship opportunity, not for donations.

Q: Can’t you do some sort of profit sharing plan with all the people who decide to donate your project?
A: That would not only be an extremely complicated process, it would create more overhead than we could handle. The administrative and legal costs alone would eat up any potential profit right up front. We wanted to set up a way to give back something to those who have decided to sponsor, and you can find the full list here.

Q: Can you list a detailed version of what you get at each money level? I’d like to know what happens if I donate an amount that isn’t listed.

Q: What if I have already donated once and I decide to donate again later? Can I add the totals together and bump up to that level?
A: As long as this happens before the release of the CD, and therefore before we finalize the mail-outs, we will be happy to combine your totals to equal the sum of all totals. For example, if you donated $50 to start with, and then donated $200 later, you would receive all the benefits of being a $250 donor.
